Allen Lund Company Partners with Verbum Dei High School
Innovative Corporate Work Study Program Offsets Tuition

La Caņada Flintridge, Calif., December 3, 2007--The Allen Lund Company is pleased to announce a partnership with Verbum Dei High School, located in South Los Angeles, as sponsors of the Verbum Dei Corporate Work Study Intern Program. "We are very excited about this program," said Terry Walker, vice president, human resources, "we have an opportunity to make a difference in these young men's lives."

Four Verbum Dei High School students are working at the Allen Lund Company headquarters during the 2007-2008 academic year as entry level clerks in four different departments: accounting, carrier resources, marketing and communications, and sales. The four young-men from Verbum Dei High School include: Nicholas Cardenas and Gilbert Wallace, freshmen; Shwamon Broom, sophomore; Robert Villa, senior. 
 
About the program from the students' perspective:
  • Nicholas Cardenas: "I enjoy being helpful, especially when I know it makes a difference for my company."
  • Gilbert Wallace: "I am thankful for having a great supervisor. Ms. Walker has a great personality and makes learning fun."
  • Shwamon Broom: "I'm thankful for the peaceful and kind environment at Allen Lund Company because that is hard to find in a job."
  • Roberto Villa: "I am very thankful for the friendly co-workers and the way everyone communicates with me as an adult."
The Allen Lund Company will pay Verbum Dei High School $6,250.00 per student for his work during the academic year, which will help fund each intern's education at Verbum Dei.

About Verbum Dei High School Corporate Work Study Intern Program:  In 2002, Verbum Dei High School adopted an innovative corporate work study program that requires all students to work five days per month with local firms in entry level clerical positions.  Corporations pay the school directly for services rendered and funds each students' education at Verbum Dei High School.
 
About Verbum Dei High School:
  Verbum Dei High School is an all-male, Archdiocesan four-year college preparatory in the Jesuit tradition located in the heart of Watts in southern Los Angeles. 
 
Founded in 1962, the student body population is approximately 340 African American and Latino students from Watts, Lynwood, Compton, Gardena, Carson, Inglewood, and South Los Angeles. 
 
Ninety-nine percent of students graduate from Verbum Dei with sixty-five percent going on to 4-year colleges and universities and thirty-five percent matriculating on to area community colleges.
